Jamie Lieberman '05

Blazing new trails is nothing new for Jamie Lieberman, Class of 2005.  In fact, she's been doing it since she first started her legal journey at SHU Law. After the “dot-com” bubble burst in 2001, Jamie left her successful career in internet publishing and decided to attend law school.  What stands out the most to Jamie during her time at SHU Law is the practical experience she gained from her coursework. “I felt equipped to go practice law in the real world; I don't think you get that kind of training at every law school,” Jamie shared. “At SHU Law, you get a great mix of professors who also practice law in the private setting, and that real-world experience was invaluable when I started my career working in law firms,” Jamie said.  Jamie also had the opportunity to work with Professor Mark Denbeaux and the Law School's Center for Policy and Research and their reports on the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp.

After graduating SHU Law and working at two well-respected law firms, Jamie went to work as a career law clerk to the Honorable Esther Salas, U.S.D.J. for three years. She then blazed a new trail and started her own law firm where she focused on advising entrepreneurs in the blogging industry, which was then just in its infancy. “The term ‘influencer' did not yet exist, but I very quickly realized that the world of online content creators was its own industry and was poised to explode,” Jamie said. To meet the burgeoning demands of this rapidly-expanding industry, Jamie blazed yet another new trail, this time forming Hashtag Legal, a company that provided legal services to online businesses and entrepreneurs. One of Jamie's clients at Hashtag Legal was Mediavine, an advertising management company helping over 10,000 content creators build sustainable businesses.   After working with Mediavine for several years, the company asked Jamie to join them as their first-ever General Counsel in November 2022. “My advice to law students or lawyers who may find themselves looking to try something new or different is to go learn; go try something new; go make that change,” Jamie shared. “I was a litigator who created their own transactional practice.  I hired around me to fill in any gaps in my knowledge base or skill set. Don't let being afraid of not knowing something hold you back.”

In her spare time, Jamie has served as an Adjunct Professor of Legal Research and Writing at the Law School, and she also enjoys spending time with her husband and two children and taking in the sights and sounds down the Jersey Shore in Asbury Park.
