Philanthropic Champions of Seton Hall's College of Nursing

Dr. Laurie (Nehls) Sherwen '70 and John Douglas Sherwen '70/MBA '76

Dr. Laurie Sherwen and John Douglas Sherwen, both proud alumni of Seton Hall University, have embarked on a remarkable journey of giving back to their alma mater. Their deep appreciation for the education they received and their understanding of the financial challenges faced by students have led them to become passionate donors to the College of Nursing. Through their generosity, they have established a named scholarship fund to support second-degree students pursuing nursing degrees, addressing a critical need for financial assistance in this area.

Having experienced firsthand the struggles of managing tuition payments with the help of federal grants and work-related support during their own academic journeys, Doug and Laurie empathize with the financial burdens faced by students. As graduates of Seton Hall, they are familiar with the university's commitment to providing a high-quality regional education that embraces student diversity.

Laurie, in particular, holds a special connection to the College of Nursing, as she herself graduated as a second-degree student. Throughout her long and successful career as a nursing professor and health-professions and nursing dean, Laurie recognized the lack of financial support available for students pursuing second-degree nursing programs. Motivated by this realization, Doug and Laurie established their named scholarship fund to bridge this gap and provide deserving students with the necessary financial resources to pursue their dreams in nursing.

The couple's relationship with Seton Hall University extends far beyond their academic years. Doug obtained both his bachelor's degree and MBA from Seton Hall, while Laurie earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. In a testament to their enduring love, Doug and Laurie even chose to celebrate their marriage in the beautiful campus chapel on July 11, 1971. Their deep connection to the University and their shared experiences have forged a lasting bond, prompting them to continue supporting Seton Hall and its students.

The decision to become donors to the College of Nursing was further facilitated by the opportunity to utilize their Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for charitable contributions. This tax advantage provided the couple with the means to fulfill their long-held intention of giving back to their alma mater.

By establishing their named scholarship fund, Doug and Laurie aim to assist individuals in becoming highly skilled BSN nurses while simultaneously addressing the pressing issue of understaffing in the healthcare system. Their commitment to improving the accessibility of education and addressing critical gaps in support is a testament to their dedication to making a meaningful impact on the lives of students and the healthcare community at large.

Doug and Laurie's story exemplifies the power of personal connections, resilience, and philanthropy. Seton Hall University has played an integral role in their lives, providing them with the education and experiences that have shaped their paths. Through their unwavering support, they ensure that future generations of students can also benefit from the transformative opportunities offered by Seton Hall. Their generosity serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating the profound impact that philanthropy can have on individuals, institutions, and society as a whole.

As Doug and Laurie continue to champion the College of Nursing at Seton Hall University, their dedication to creating opportunities for aspiring nurses and strengthening the healthcare workforce remains unwavering. Their Seton Hall story is one built on relationships, resilience, and a shared vision of a brighter future for students and the healthcare industry.
