Honoring his family by helping others
George Mehm '77/M.B.A. '80 learned the importance of education from family members who did not have an opportunity to advance their own.
“My grandmother, Victoria Kriz, only had an eighth grade formal education, but was one of the most learned people I ever met and a firm believer in knowledge,” he said. “My parents, George and Lois, were not able to go to college, yet they instilled in me the importance of education from an early age.”
The first person in his family to attend college, Mehm took his love of learning to Seton Hall, where he earned a B.A. in political science and an M.B.A. in finance. Today he serves on the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies Board of Advisors in the Stillman School of Business.
As a two-time alumnus and now a University adviser, Mehm has watched Seton Hall's reputation for excellence grow over the last four decades. To help continue this upward trajectory, he established a bequest to create the Mehm and Kriz Family Endowed Scholarship Fund. The gift will provide scholarships for select undergraduate students in Stillman and the College of Arts and Sciences.
“I continue to be pleased with the caliber of the students, faculty and administration at Seton Hall,” he said. “I want to pay forward to another generation the opportunities I have enjoyed through my affiliations with the University.”
As its name indicates, the fund will exist in perpetuity as a tribute to members of Mehm's family, including the father, mother and grandmother who taught him to cherish education. “I hope this scholarship will play a small role in encouraging others to consider setting up similar arrangements at The Hall,” he said.
