School of Diplomacy and International Relations Alumni Mentorship Program

This initiative is exclusively for full-time sophomore, junior, senior or graduate students in Diplomacy, offering a unique opportunity to be paired with Seton Hall alumni who are seasoned professionals eager to share their insights and experiences. This year, our focus is on developing essential soft skills and enhancing human interaction, especially in an era where AI is rapidly transforming the workplace.

Through this program, the students will gain “real-world” advice, feedback on potential career paths, and professional guidance to help you navigate the early stages of your journey.

For our esteemed mentors, this program is more than just a chance to give back—it's an opportunity to reconnect with the Seton Hall community and shape the next generation of leaders. As a mentor, you'll guide students and help them build the interpersonal skills needed to thrive in any professional environment. How does the Diplomacy Alumni Mentorship Program Work?

The mentorship program kicks off with an initial interview to better understand your goals and interests, ensuring a meaningful pairing with a mentor. Once matched, you’ll attend a kickoff meeting where expectations will be set, and you’ll have the chance to meet your mentor. Throughout the program, you and your mentor are expected to meet 3-4 times—either virtually or in person. Along the way, there may be a couple of networking events to further enhance your experience. The program will culminate in a celebration event in May, where we’ll recognize the growth and achievements of both mentors and mentees.

Mentor Expectations

The role of a mentor is special because it gives you the power to make a difference in a student's life. The goal is to create a comfortable and trusting relationship with the mentee. Being a mentor requires leadership and commitment, and it is also a great opportunity to shape the next generation of leaders. As a mentor, you'll help students build the interpersonal skills needed to thrive in any professional environment. Plus, you'll have the chance to share your success stories, offering students invaluable lessons from your career.

As a mentor, you are expected to initiate the first contact with your mentee within one week of the kickoff meeting. You should also ensure that you and your mentee meet at least 3-4 times, either virtually or in person. Additionally, you should provide actionable feedback and guidance during these meetings, helping your mentee develop their soft skills and professional growth.

When your mentee is not meeting your expectations, you are also expected to report this back to the mentorship program coordinators in a timely manner. The information of the coordinators is listed on the mentorship website.

Mentee Expectations

As a mentee of the Diplomacy Mentorship Program, we expect students to come in with a respectful attitude. Our alumni volunteers and coordinators have been preparing this program for months and your motivation and cooperation is essential. Mentees will need to meet with their mentors at desired times and find the best form of communication with their mentors. The most important part of the mentee/mentor relationship is communication. You are expected to respond to your mentor’s outreach within 48 hours.

You should actively participate in scheduling and preparing for each of the 3-4 required meetings, ensuring you are prepared with questions or topics for discussion. Prompt communication and a commitment to this timeline are essential to make the most of your mentorship experience.

Steps to Become a Mentee

• Submit applications before the due date.
• The coordinators will review your application at the end of the application period.
• We will schedule an interview with you.
• If you are selected, we will contact you with the mentor we match for you and announce the kickoff meeting details.
• You can begin to exchange with your mentor on professional objectives and gain insight into your careers.
