Support Faculty Excellence and Research
Faculty Excellence
The School's faculty are leading scholars and practitioners in their field who are consistently called upon to give opinions, testify before Congress, produce research, write, and engage with global thought leaders. In addition, they are excellent educators and mentors to our students. Support important initiatives for excellence in teaching and scholarship as well as student-aided faculty research through teaching awards and research grants.
Student Research
DiploLab
The School of Diplomacy has launched the "DiploLab" for student research, directed
by Prof. Joseph Huddleston. The DiploLab pairs students with faculty research projects,
providing them a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in academic research
and build long-term relationships with their professors that extend beyond the classroom.
It creates an avenue for professional development that supports students' academic
and career goals for years after they graduate. Students are working on projects including:
exciting on the ground research on the conflict in Yemen; collecting original data
on separatist diplomacy; transcribing interviews conducted by faculty with policy
decision-makers; designing and refining surveys; and analyzing survey data.
National Security Fellowship
The National Security Graduate Fellowship is a unique, experiential learning opportunity
whereby students engage in a comprehensive research project to support a mission requirement
provided by one of the vital agencies of the U.S. government: Department of State,
Department of Defense, or the White House. The students complete an operational research
paper recommending solutions to some of the U.S. government's most challenging foreign
policy problems. They present their findings to U.S. government officials in the requesting
agency. Their findings and policy recommendations are then circulated among the department
and other agencies in the intelligence community.
Research Centers
Center for Foreign Policy Studies
The Center serves as a hub for research, teaching and training in the foreign policy domain.
It is committed to policy-relevant scholarship exploring the rapidly changing geopolitical
landscape and how states across the world respond to emerging challenges and opportunities.
Through its joint research, teaching and programming activities, the Center aims to
provide students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to prepare
them to become effective policymakers, analysts, and advocates. Learn more about Center

Center for Global Health Studies
The Center was the first program of its kind in the United States when launched in 2003. It
is the only program in the New York City area that emphasizes the foreign policy and
governance aspects of global health. It has a regional focus on emerging powers and
Asia, especially China—a country that plays a critical role in the dynamics of health,
development and power. Our School is the first professional school of international
affairs in the U.S. to offer an academic concentration that explicitly addresses the
international security and foreign policy aspects of health issues with the Global
Health and Human Security specialization. Other programs at major universities offer
specializations which are more clinical in nature or broadly address issues of global
health. Additionally, the Center is the only program nationally to offer a peer-reviewed
journal, the journal of Global Health Governance: A Scholarly Journal for the New
Health Paradigm, which provides a platform for practitioners and academics to explore
global health issues and their implications to governance and security at national
and international levels. Learn more about the center and watch a video.
Center for Peace and Conflict Studies
The Center promotes interdisciplinary research on global issues related to peace and conflict
with an emphasis on conflict prevention, management, and resolution, as well as post-conflict
peace building and reconstruction. The Center's ongoing projects include a U.S.- China
dialogue program on the South China Sea disputes for high-level policy scholars and
military officials from the two countries. Learn more about Center Director, Dr. Zheng Wang and his research, and the research of the Center's core members.
Center for United Nations and Global Governance Studies
The Center focuses on the US-UN relationship, international organizations as independent actors,
compliance with international courts, explaining the cross-national diffusion of transparency,
transparency in international organizations, and the role of international organizations
in post-conflict studies. The Center plans to coordinate research interests around
annual unifying themes, invite speakers to campus in support of those research themes,
and explore new digital strategies for research outreach - our goal is to be a new
kind of research center both in rethinking how to generate research products through
the blog and through using social media. The Center's website is currently being followed
by people in 70 countries. Learn more and follow the Center on Twitter @SHU_UN_Studies.
