Nurturing a New Generation of Students
Thomas Butler learned firsthand how Seton Hall develops a student's mind, heart and spirit; he just didn't realize it was going to be so literal.
Shortly after he started coursework for his doctorate in health sciences at the University, Tom learned he needed coronary bypass surgery. He called the department chair, Genevieve Pinto-Zipp, P.T., Ed.D., to withdraw from his classes. She told him withdrawal was not necessary, as she would speak to his professors and that she was confident they would work with him. She told him he only needed to worry about getting well!
Tom was able to recover from his surgery, complete the program, and earn his Ph.D. His gratitude for Seton Hall's nurturing environment in the Catholic tradition that also fosters academic excellence inspired him to give back.
Tom strongly felt the need to contribute what he could so Seton Hall could continue to support and nurture new generations of students. It was for that reason that shortly before his retirement he decided to participate in the Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) program.
"As a retired college professor, I know how complicated the life of a student is these days. It is critical that the University has the necessary resources for student support, whether it be financial, academic or emotional support," emphasized Tom.
Tom hopes his gift will inspire others to help sustain professors like Dr. Pinto-Zipp and appreciative students like him, whose career success benefitted from her compassion.
